Giuseppe Tedesco charged with making terroristic threats as he was being transported to jail.
After being convicted of murder in state Superior Court, Giuseppe Tedesco was arrested on new charges of aggravated assault of a correctional officer and third-degree terroristic threats on Thursday. The officer he allegedly assaulted while being transported to a holding cell sustained a head injury and fractured fibula, according to Lt. Dave Rome of the Sussex County Sheriff's Office. Tedesco was also charged with obstruction of a governmental function. Tedesco, a 27-year-old Hopatcong resident, was found guilty of first-degree murder, possession of a gun and possession of a gun for an unlawful purpose Thursday. Giuseppe Tedesco was found guilty of first-degree murder by jurors Thursday for the shooting death of Alyssa Ruggieri as a six-week trial came to a close, according to New Jersey Herald. Tedesco, a 27-year-old Hopatcong resident, was also found guilty of possession of a gun and possession of a gun for unlawful purposes. A fight broke out Wednesday afternoon when a Sussex County Superior Court Judge dismissed the jury who did not reach a verdict after a second straight day of deliberations in the Hopatcong murder trial. As the murder trial of Giuseppe Tedesco continued this week, Tedesco told jurors and a prosecutor that the gun used to shoot Alyssa Ruggieri six times to death was, at one point, pointed at his own face. Tedesco described the series of events leading up to the shooting in a Newton courthouse on Wednesday. According to NJ.com, he told Sussex County Prosecutor Seanna Pappas that Ruggieri had left him several brief text messages before he visited her home, in Hopatcong, and a physical dispute ensued. Evidence from Giuseppe Tedesco's handgun and material from the sweater Alyssa Ruggieri wore the night she was killed was used to replicate the murder scene and determine how close the gunshots were fired, a firearms identification expert testified in court on Thursday, according to the New Jersey Herald. In the second week of Tedesco's murder trial, Gerald Burkhart, of the New Jersey State Police, an expert in ballistics and firearms identification, said in his investigation he determinned Tedesco fired his gun at Ruggieri at close range, and the bullet wound to Ruggieri's abdomen was "greater than contact, but less than 12 inches," the report said. A start date has been scheduled in the trial of a Hopatcong man accused of killing borough resident Alyssa Ruggieri in 2010. The trial of Giuseppe Tedesco will begin on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Sussex County Superior Court in Newton, according to the office of Judge Peter Conforti. Jury selection, which began Sept. 12, was completed more than a month after it began. The trial schedule runs to December, excepting Mondays and Fridays, and dates blocked out by Conforti’s other court duties and other contingencies. NEWTON–The trial of Giuseppe Tedesco, accused of killing Hopatcong resident Alyssa Ruggieri in 2010, moved one step closer to starting with the selection of a jury. But no date has yet been set to hear opening arguments in Sussex County Superior Court, said Superior Court Judge Peter Conforti’s office Tuesday. Opening arguments in the trial of accused killer Giuseppe Tedesco may not begin until about a month after jury selection began in Sussex County Superior Court, according to a report. Sussex County Assistant Prosecutor Seana Pappas said the trial may not begin until the middle of October, with it expected to last until late December, according to a report by The Star-Ledger. Tedesco is charged with murder, illegal possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in the March 27, 2010, death of Alyssa Ruggieri. The allegations were placed on the record during a January pre-trial conference hearing during which Tedesco formally rejected the state’s plea offer of a 30 year prison sentence on the murder charge.

The New Jersey Herald reports the judge presiding over the case of the Hopatcong man charged with murdering a borough woman denied a request from Giuseppe Tedesco's attorney to bar public and press from some hearings. Tedesco, 26, allegedly killed Alyssa Ruggieri, 22, of Hopatcong, in her home in 2010. He's being held on $1 million bail and faces up to life in prison if convicted. Defense attorney Anthony Iacullo petitioned Judge Peter Conforti to exclude the media from proceedings regarding Tedesco's alleged jailhouse confession to other inmates, the report said.
