District Improvement on Minds of Hopatcong BOE Candidates

Six candidates running for three seats with issues of community support, school quality on the minds of voters.

Six candidates for three open seats on the Hopatcong School Board face  addressing issues that range from tight budgets, reduced state aid and regaining public support for the K-12 district. Residents have recently complained about the drop in ranking of the Hopatcong schools in the annual New Jersey Monthly list. Hopatcong dropped 89 spots on the list. They also raised concerns about school programs when 21 students applied to attend Lenape Valley Regional High School in Stanhope, a district designated as a choice school under a revised state program. Seeking the three, 3-year seats are incumbents Dolores Krowl, board president Clifford Lundin and Joan S. Reilly, and challengers Judith Antonelli, John H. Maine and Quashinna Williams. The …

School Task Force Deadline Approaching

So far 30 residents have expressed interest in joining group to help provide direction for the district.

Hopatcong residents interested in serving on the “High School of the Future” task force being formed by the board have until Oct. 1 to sign up. Board of Education president Clifford Lundin said this week that so far 30 residents have indicated a willingness to serve on the panel. The board would also like to discuss hiring a facilitator from the New Jersey School Boards Association to assist in the formation of the task force and the development of goals. The task force idea was put forth in late summer after New Jersey Monthly magazine in its annual high school ranking issue placed Hopatcong High School at 289, a drop of 89 slots from its 2011 ranking as the 200th best school in state.
