Suspended Teacher's Attorney Claims She'll Return

Hilary Gorzelnik has been suspended with pay since June 6.

According to her attorney, Hilary Gorzelnik will eventually return to her job as a physical education teacher at Hopatcong High School, a report said. William Coy Jr. said he is confident his client will be vindicated, according to NJ.com. Athletic Director Tom Vara recently named second grade teacher Kathleen Brennan as coach of the girls soccer team that had been led by Gorzelnik. “As of right now, the issue of Hilary Gorzelnik is in the superintendent’s office," Vara said. "There are conversations going on that we’re not privy to. I was told to bring on a new soccer coach at this point. They’re still working out whatever they need to work out. It could be settled tomorrow or five years from now." Gorzelnik has been suspended with pay …

Suspended Teacher's Coaching Spot Filled

Second grade teacher slated to coach girls soccer team as suspension continues.

Second grade teacher Kathleen Brennan will be the Hopatcong High School girls soccer coach this season, taking the place of suspended physical education teacher Hilary Gorzelnik. When asked about the status of Gorzelnik in the district, Superintendent Dr. Charles Maranzano said the matter is still in the legal department and could take a while to resolve. Athletic Director Tom Vara said he has brought in Brennan to take over as girls soccer coach at this time. “As of right now, the issue of Hilary Gorzelnik is in the superintendent’s office, Vara said. "There are conversations going on that we’re not privy to. I was told to bring on a new soccer coach at this point. They’re still working out whatever they need to work out. It could be …

Suspended Hopatcong Teacher Probe Continues

School board voted to suspend high school teacher Hilary Gorzelnik, 31, a month ago amid accusations she might have had inappropriate contact with students.

A month after suspending Hopatcong High School physical education teacher Hilary Gorzelnik, the district is still investigating accusations the 31-year-old might have had inappropriate communications with students, Superintendent Dr. Charles Maranzano said. "These things take time," Maranznao said. "Right now, it's in legal hands. I don't have anything to report if that's what you're asking. There's nothing at this point we can share now." The Board of Education suspended Gorzelink with pay at a special meeting at 7:30 a.m. June 6, but the investigation into the girls soccer coach and drivers' education instructor has been ongoing for about six weeks. Maranzano said he recommended the suspension to the school board. Maranzano has also said…

I laugh at the fact that they are asking the public for evidence. So in other words... you don't have ANYTHING on her. So why don't we forget it and let her come back!   more ›

School Official: Teacher Probe 'Not a Witch Hunt'

But Superintendent Dr. Charles Maranzano says Hopatcong would consider any evidence that could aid investigation into suspended high school teacher Hilary Gorzelnik.

Hopatcong schools Superintendent Dr. Charles Maranzano said Monday the district would consider any evidence from the public that could help the investigation into the suspended high school teacher alleged to have violated the district's code of ethics. But he also said the district doesn't have it out for 31-year-old physical education teacher Hilary Gorzelnik, who was suspended with pay June 6. "If someone were to send it to us, we would embrace any bit of evidence," Maranzano said. "But let's also say this is not a witch hunt." Last Friday, NJ.com reported Maranzano said he had "very serious concerns" that the physical education teacher could have been involved with possibly improper emails and text messages with male and female students…

It is never appropriate for a teacher to be texting students, ever. When I first started teaching, I was 23 years old and I had 17 and 18 year old students in the classes I taught at Hackettstown high school. I also had a 20 year old boy on my track team. I was always sure to act in a manner that would never allow anyone to question my professionalism. If I could figure it out at 23, then this "…   more ›

Report: Suspended Teacher's Messages a Concern

Superintendent worried about teacher's communication with students via emails and text messages.

NJ.com reports Hopatcong's school superintendent is worried a high school teacher who was suspended with pay  might have had improper communications with students. As first reported by Patch, Hilary Gorzelnik, 31, has been suspended since June 6. Superintendent Dr. Charles Maranazno said he has "very serious concerns" that the physical education teacher could have been involved with possibly improper emails and text messages with male and female students, the report said. Maranzano also told NJ.com that Gorzelnik was suspended to keep her from students until the investigation ends. Gorzelnik, a girls soccer coach, has been at the district for seven years. She couldn't be reached for contact Friday. Maranzano had previously said he couldn't…

(Part Two of Two) I give Dr. Maranzano a tremendous amount of credit for stepping up to the plate and taking action against the poor behavior of the staff that has been acting as if they were still in high school rather than teachers and administrators. When Dr. Maranzano took over two years ago, he was handed a district that has been on a downward spiral for years! What took many years to break…   more ›

What's Next for Suspended Teacher, Hopatcong?

Insight into the process from a NJEA spokesman.

Now what? The Hopatcong school district voted unanimously to suspend high school physical education teacher Hilary Gorzelnik with pay last week as it investigates allegations of ethics violations, though no charges have been filed against the 31-year-old. But as the school year comes to a close, what are the Board of Education's options? What's ahead for Gorzelnik, a seven-year teacher and girls soccer coach who, school officials say, has a spotless record? New Jersey Education Association Director of Communications Steve Wollmer spoke with Patch about the situation Tuesday. A Department of Education spokesperson didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment. Here's what we learned. How long can Hopatcong suspend a tenured teacher…

What's amazing to me is that everyone has already judged her without even knowing what she's been accused of! Inappropriate emails and texts can cover a very wide and varied range. Everyone should get their minds out of the gutter and consider other areas of what a district may consider inappropriate to cover up their uncalled for accusations! Let's get real here a grown woman was suspended from …   more ›

I knew hilary growing up and all i can say is that this surprises me because she is a sweet person and in no way someone who i would expect to act in a deviant manner. This was probably/hopefully blown out of proportion but i understand needing to protect the kids. Too many people we wouldnt have suspected have crossed lines with our kids. Out of fear we can certainly take liberties in calling …   more ›
