We get it. Sometimes it feels like there's nothing happening in Hopatcong. And when we get bored with the mundane, we reflect. Enter: Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum. The place at the Hopatcong State Park is filled with all kinds of neat exhibits detailing the borough's past. Unfortunately, it's closed during the summer. Not to worry. Looks like some people just can't let Bertrand Island go. Search for the former Lake Hopatcong attraction, which brought in celebrities and visitors from 1928 to 1983, on Youtube and you'll come up with a ton of video collages and clips of the old amusement park. Here's another one. While it's all still shots, it's got a bunch of photos of materials associated with Betrand Island, from tickets to flyers. And, of course, there are plenty of pictures of the old place, which are bound to reinvigorate the memories of many longtime Hopatcong residents. If you couldn't tell, Patch has become rather fond of uncovering stories, photos or videos from the borough's rich past, from an explanation of what happened to the abandoned building on Lakeside Boulevard to tidbits about Hopatcong's most famous resident. Add another historical gem to the list. Recently a video of a family enjoying a trip to Bertrand Island, a big-time amusement park that lasted from 1928-1983, was uploaded to Youtube. In the clip, children take a trip on a fire truck-inspired merry-go-round, enjoy the Lake Hopatcong breeze and even check out an old-school roller coaster. According to their website, www.lakehopatconghistory.com they will be opened Monday July 16th from 6-9pm. Not sure if it will be every Monday after that. I recently joined their membership program and enjoyed the newsletter that cam along with my packet. Looking forward to future newsletters and attending the events.   more ›
