PSE&G is rebuilding a power station in Hopatcong and Sparta citizens say it is making their neighborhood unsafe.
Residents of a quiet mountaintop neighborhood dumped their frustrations on the Sparta Township Council last week, complaining that their hilly, private streets had become an extension of the nearby construction site where PSE&G is building a new electric transmission line. By Wednesday, their complaints had reached the ears of power company officials, who met with residents that afternoon, said public relations manager George Sous. Sous said the company reached out to its suppliers and contractors on that site to mitigate the intensity of the delivery activity, modify delivery schedules, emphasize hours of operation, and focus on safety. Anthony Troyano Jr. to serve five years in prison.
A 39-year-old Hopatcong man pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary stemming from a pair of arrests in Mendham Township at the end of last year, Morris County Assistant Prosecutor Brad Seabury said. According to an e-mail sent by Seabury, the plea agreement with Anthony Troyano Jr. calls for a five-year stint in New Jersey state prison. Seabury also said the deal was reached prior to indictment and Troyano would be ineligible for parole for two and a half years. Official sentencing for Troyano is scheduled for May 17, and Seabury said that the defendant is also being ordered to pay restitution to his victim. Troyano was originally arrested on Nov. 16 of last year for allegedly burglarizing a home four days prior in Mendham Township where …

A year after the Hopatcong Police Department was hit with the sudden loss of K-9 Officer Rosco, the department has now welcomed K-9 Eli into the ranks through the help of the Elks Lodge. The German Shephard was purchased from the Seeing Eye in Morris Township, following a $500 donation from the Lodge, according to a report on nj.com and the police department's website. "K-9 Eli is a one purpose dog and that is for drug detection," said Lt. Thomas Kmetz in a press release. "He will be used on motor vehicle stops, school searches and anywhere else where someone may be hiding narcotics." Hopatcong police have asked residents to educate themselves about the dangers of stepping out on to a frozen lake after two teenage boys fell through the ice of Budd Lake Monday night, their bodies recovered by authorities. State and local police spent days on Budd Lake searching for two missing teenagers believed to have fallen through the ice. The body of one of the teenagers was recovered Tuesday. The second teen's body was recovered Wednesday. Hopatcong Police Lt. Thomas Kmetz wrote a message to residents on the Hopatcong Police Facebook page reminding them of other, local incidents where individuals who went out on a lake perceived to be frozen had died. Local hot dog restaurant plans for bigger changes in the new year.
Sabretti's is going into the new year with new style. The Hopatcong hot dog restaurant, located on Lakeside Boulevard, recently changed its design by replacing its menu boards, adding pictures to the walls, and improving the menu to make it easier and more exciting for customers when they step into the restaurant. Owner Rohan Shetty said that ever since he opened his unique hot dog restaurant in Hopatcong in July 2011, he has been making changes to the restaurant to make sure customers are completely satisfied. With 30 speciality hot dogs to choose from, Shetty noticed some customers ordering hot dogs and not knowing what to expect. Shetty wanted to make it easier for the customers, and replaced all of the menu boards, that used to just …

39-year-old arrested for the third time in a month, allegedly linked to second Mendham Twp. break-in.
Mendham Township Police Chief Steve Crawford said earlier this month if someone commits a crime in Mendham Township, it isn't a matter of if they were going to be caught, but rather when. For Hopatcong resident Anthony Troyano Jr., that seems to hold true. Troyano was arrested Thursday for a third time in a month and linked to a second Mendham Township burglary, according to Lt. Vito Abrusci. Troyano, 39, was originally arrested on Nov. 16 for allegedly burglarizing a home four days prior in Mendham Township. Troyano made bail on those charges but was arrested at a DWI checkpoint in Hopatcong on Dec. 7 and charged with possession of crack cocaine, possession of paraphernalia, driving while suspended and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle…

The Borough Council agreed Wednesday to apply for a $32,000 grant from the New Jersey Highlands Council to expand the borough’s farmer’s market. The market ran from June to October in the center o the borough and drew hundreds of visitors each week. Councilwoman Marie Ryder Galante said the Highlands grant would be used to develop a better advertising plan. “We also want to get a wine vendor and a cheese vendor,” she said.
