Top 2,000 public schools across nation placed in annual standings, none from Sussex County crack list.
Hopatcong and Sparta High Schools both missed the top-2,000 high schools in the nation as ranked by Newsweek in its annual report released this week. The standings showed 93 schools from New Jersey made the master list, but none from Sussex County could crack the top 2,000. Just nine schools from Morris County made the list. Newsweek prefaced the list by saying the schools were ranked by how effective they were in turning out college-ready graduates. There are six components that factored into the listing methodology: In April, U.S. News & World Report released its top high schools in the nation, with the top-50 making the cut for New Jersey. U.S. News & World Report's annual national rankings released; no Sussex County schools make top 50 spots in the state.
Sparta High School students tested either at or above New Jersey averages, while Hopatcong High School students tested below those numbers, and neither were ranked in the top 50 schools in the state, according to U.S. News & World Report. The magazine’s annual high school rankings were released Tuesday morning and showed a changeup in the top 10 spots, and no Sussex County school made the top 54. The top spot went to Biotechnology High School in Freehold, ousting this year’s number two, High Technology High School. Three main factors are calculated for the rankings, including college readiness, math proficiency and language proficiency. "Little Shop of Horrors" makes its way to the Hopatcong High School stage.
The Hopatcong Board of Education is in session this week, holding its first meeting since approving the 2013-14 budget in March. That spending plan brought about a $65 tax hike for the average Hopatcong homeowner, with an overall expenditure of $35,339,000. While the district did receive more funds in state aid for the coming year than it did for the current year, it was still hard to overcome the massive decrease in funding year over year, Superintendent Charles Maranzano said. Pope's Izzo named Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex County Basketball Championship tournament MVP.
Pope John and Sparta High Schools' boys basketball teams have played twice already this season, but Friday night was for a prize bigger than pride: the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex County Basketball Championship. And with both teams looking to springboard from this game into the state tournament, the game held even greater importance. Played on a neutral site at Hopatcong High School, there was no room for either team to go slowly into the game. Both teams have been impacted by injuries to their big men. Pope John was without Cincinnati-bound Jermaine Lawrence, who re-injured his wrist, and Sparta's Mitchell Cohen, who injured his knee in the semi-final game with North Hunterdon last week. Courtney Macaluso will compete in two events Feb. 16.
Hopatcong High School senior Courtney Macaluso doesn’t want her winter track season to end just yet. Thanks to her stellar performance at the North I, Group I Sectional Championships, it won’t. Macaluso qualified for the Group I Championships by placing fourth in the 400 meter dash, notching a season best 1:03.53. Macaluso also qualified in the 55 meter dash and grabbed a second-place silver medal in the event with a time of 7.74 seconds. The championships will be held Saturday, Feb. 16 at 9 a.m. at the Bennett Complex in Toms River. Hopatong High School Junior Jade Webster also represented at the Sectional Championships, establishing personal bests in the shot put (26’11.25; 10th place) and 55 meter dash (8.37 seconds). Record 'pretty clean' for a large district, superintendent says.
The school district recorded 11 incidents of harassment, intimidation or bullying between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, Superintendent Charles Maranzano told the school board at its most recent meeting. Under a new state law, school districts must report the number of times personnel investigated reports of harassment, intimidation or bullying. The rules were put in place last year following a student’s lawsuit against the Toms River school district, Maranzano said. A school must investigate alleged incidents between students that involve gender, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, physical appearance or ancestry, he said. In only their second meet of the season running for the Polar Bears Track Club, Hopatcong's winter track trio posted solid efforts. The girls, Courtney Macaluso and Jade Webster, each competed in three events while Dylan Capwell put all his energy in to his premier event. Easily placing first in the Young Men's division of the 800m run at the USATF - New Jersey Association Youth Indoor Developmental meet held on Jan. 27 at the Bennett Center in Toms River, Dylan posted a top-20 statewide time of 1:59.63. Running for the Polar Bears Track Club out of Fredon, NJ, under the direction of coach Bruce Wask, three of Hopatcong’s own came home with hardware for their efforts in the first meet of the season at the annual East Stroudsburg Warrior Classic Friday night. Senior Dylan Capwell, Hopatcong’s top middle-distance star and NJ Meet of Champions medalist, held off a late charge to the finish line to place first in the 400m dash in a hand time of 52.0. High school turns to online news after print edition was cut three years ago.
Hopatcong student news is back. Three years after the high school's student newspaper was discontinued due to budget cuts, a new, more cost-effective newspaper has returned. The high school recently launched its brand new online news website, The Hopatcong Arrow, last week, and teachers and students are looking forward to once again providing the school community with the latest news in a faster, easier way. "We're looking at it as a vehicle of communication," said Sandy DeRose, the newspaper advisor, "and I think just the fact that the students are so excited and so positive about the venture that the results can only be positive." Negations still unresolved for aides, custodians and cafeteria workers after more than two years.
The Hopatcong High School support staff contracts that have been held up for over two years due to unresolved negotiations about scheduled raises may see an agreement in the next month, District Superintendent Dr. Charles Maranzano said. The support staff, which includes the aides, custodians and cafeteria workers, went back and forth with the board at Monday night's BOE meeing, trying to work to resolve the ongoing issue, Maranzano said. The aides, which are in a different bargaining unit other than the adminstration, secretaries, principals, and teachers, have argued that they should receive more than the 1.95 percent pay raise. The custodians and cafeteria workers have agreed to the pay raise, but their contract is held up as well …
