Board Balks at Middle School Schedule Change

Administration's plan called for more instruction time, but less elective courses.

The Hopatcong Board of Education rejected an administration plan to alter the middle school class schedule next year to even out the schedules of sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Superintendent Charles Maranzano said the changes would have produced 4,500 more minutes of instruction time in a school year, created a uniform, but longer, 40-minute lunch period, but potentially would have reduced time for classes for electives, like art and music and foreign language from two to one. The loss of electives soured the board on the plan. They preferred the current plan which allows students two elective periods at a time. Board member Richard Lavery said the longer lunch period was “wasted time” and wanted to see a schedule with more class time…

the board was against the overpaid and underworked superintendent's idiotic suggestion. Why he is making any suggestions on what to do in this system is beyond me. Go away already. he messed everything up from day one and now that he is leaving he"s become the mastermind of stupidity. Now Cliff use this as a backdrop for hiring another superintendent. Can't wait to see what happens with that. …   more ›

Boy, 11, Starts Toy Drive For Borough Families in Need

Sixth-grader Mikey Gaccione inspired while he was volunteering during Sandy, starts collecting toys for the holidays.

Mikey Gaccione is touching the lives of borough families this holiday season by collecting toys for those in need at Hopatcong Middle School. Volunteering is nothing new to the Hopatcong 6th grader, a Boy Scout with Pack 91 in Stanhope, who spent 72 hours helping out at the high school shelter in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Inspired by the events from Sandy with the motivation to help others in his community, the 11-year-old came up with the idea to collect toys for families in need all by himself. He has now started a toy drive at the middle school where residents can donate new and unwrapped toys until Dec. 19. The collection box is located in the main office of the middle school. Gaccione's mother, Denise Baird Caputo, said her …

Bear Safety Tips Shared at Middle School

Teachers say school has seen an increase in bears on school campus.

Teachers at Hopatcong Middle School say they have been seeing an increase in bears on school property, and want to make the kids know how to react when they see them. That's why eighth-grade teacher Maureen Gallone gave a presentation on bear safety to the sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders on Wednesday to make sure they're aware of how to avoid contact with the mom and cub bears they have been seeing hanging out around the dumpsters. "Her presentation was very informative, and gave a lot of insight," language arts teacher Donald Dippel said. "I think it was a great way to 'wow' the kids to help them understand it a little better and what to do in a situation if they ever get put in a predicament." One of the pointers Gallone told the …

Search for New High School Principal Ongoing

District announced principal shakeup in May, moving high school head Emil Binotto to the middle school.

The Hopatcong school district still has yet to fill its open high school principal position, Superintendent Dr. Charles Maranzano said. "We want to make sure we've covered as much territory in the screening process as possible," said Maranzano, who also said the district has interviewed hopefuls. "There's a strong committee" of administrators vetting principal candidates and "they're setting the bar high." Maranzano had said he hopes to have the job filled by July 1. Maranzano said the shift's purpose was to strengthen administration at the lower levels, bolstering student performance. The district announced a principal shakeup in May after Tulsa Trail School Principal Dr. Joanne Mullane asked to take over open curriculum supervisor duties…

binotto was doing an excellent job he must of said no to someone with power. It will be difficult to fill his shoes, but rumor has it that C maranzano feels cinotti is a good choice with all of her 5 years of experience and no principal or vice principal experience. Maybe Charles JR should have left well enough alone and focused on the students not politics.   more ›

A Warm Welcome to Hopatcong High School

Upperclassmen help soon-to-be freshmen acclimate to new environment.

The Hopatcong Middle School held its second annual Eighth Grade Picnic on Thursday, June 7 at the Wayne L. Threlkeld Hilltop Fields. This was a day where students got to play games such as soccer, volleyball, and softball as well as other team games. For those not sports oriented, the kids had the opportunity to read and visit with friends. There was something for everyone at this year end celebration. The Middle School PTO sponsored this event, and they treated the eighth graders to burgers, dogs, chips, fruit salad and drinks. Later there were cookies for dessert. The students had a great time with their peers participating in the various activities and filling up on food. However, there was more to come. High school students came up to …

I wish I had this program when I was a Freshman. This sounds like a wonderful program. Kudos also to the Middle School PTO it sounds like they made some happy school memories. Again, I did not have anything like this when I was becoming a freshman. All I remember was buying my own autograph book and getting my friends to sign it.   more ›

Girl Honoring Great-Grandma at Cancer Event

Hopatcong's Relay for Life informational meeting raises money, gains participants.

Alicia Martin-Conyers' great-grandmother, Sylvia Martin, died of cancer two years ago. So when the Hopatcong Middle School eighth-grader saw a sign seeking organizers for the borough's upcoming Relay For Life, an American Cancer Society fundraiser, she asked her mother if she could join. Anissa Martin-Conyers quickly granted her daughter permission. "That's how we came about, and everybody's been great," Anissa Martin-Conyers said at a Relay For Life informational meeting at the Hopatcong Senior Citizens Center Sunday. "Everybody's been receptive and very friendly. I think we're going to have a great turnout." If the informational meeting was any indication, Anissa Martin-Conyers will be right, as co-organizer Tara Rossy said the event now…

Substance-Abuse Counselor Back at HS?

It tops the principal's wish list for 2012-2013.

The return of a substance-abuse counselor to the district topped Hopatcong High School Principal Emil Binotto's wish list for the 2012-2013 school year at Monday night's Board of Education meeting at the administration building. The high school has seen eight "bona fide drug-related issues" on its campus since September, Binotto said. "That doesn't include kids that have issues at home," he said. Binotto and Hopatcong schools Superintendent Dr. Charles Maranazno said bringing back a substance-abuse counselor could help rehabilitate drug-abusing students and prevent others from using drugs. Hopatcong lost its substance-abuse counselor, which also handled middle school students, in 2010 after the district lost more than $1.7 million in state…

James, are you talking about the drug counselor? Or did you mean about bringing people in to talk to the students? Not sure about the funds for a counselor but there are grants available for substance abuse prevention, one source is SAMHSA. There are other sources out there. As for bringing people into the school to talk, many do it for free both recovering addicts and victims. Maybe someone from…   more ›

Hopatcong Students Raise Money for UNICEF

Sixth-graders bring in more than $200.

The following is from Hopatcong Middle School teacher Christine DeRosa. Hopatcong Middle School’s sixth-grade class continued the long standing tradition of collecting for United Nations Children's Fund’s annual Trick-or-Treat fundraising campaign this year. Our students were very excited by the opportunity help other children in need around the world. In addition to their collection efforts, they also learned about the origin of United Nations and UNICEF. This year students raised $214. Congratulations Hopatcong Middle School sixth-grade class!
