Officials, residents raise concerns at third BPU hearing about utility company's storm response.
Nearly two months after Hurricane Sandy pummeled through the Northeast, the frustration about the communication from state officials and power companies in the storm aftermath is still a major discussion among members of the public. The quality and accuracy of the information flow was the key subject brought up at the Board of Public Utilities third public hearing at Hopatcong Middle School Tuesday night. The New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime Report showed Hopatcong's overall crime rate to decrease between 2010 and 2011. The report, released last week, stated that reported burglaries decreased from 30 incidents in 2010 to 23 in 2011 and there were 40 less larceny incidents (100 to 60) in 2011. Violent crime cases, however, stayed the same at seven incidents, while non-violent crimes saw a major decrease from 130 incidents in 2010 to 88 in 2011. In 2010, there were five aggrevated assault incidents included in the report while seven were reported in 2011. There were also five motor vehicle thefts in the borough in 2011, and none reported in 2010. Hopatcong's Crime Index Total went down significantly in 2011 from 137 to 95. The …

Nearly two months after Superstorm Sandy, residents will have the chance to tell state officials first-hand their concerns and suggestions for the storm response and what it was like to survive without power for days. The Board of Public Utilities will hold a public hearing on Tuesday at Hopatcong Middle School from 4 to 7 p.m. to hear input from residents all over the region about what the experience in the aftermath of Sandy was like. Hopatcong's annual Holiday House Decorating Contest will be held on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Judges will select the top three decorated homes this season. Residents must sign up to participate by Wednesday at 4 p.m. by submitting the registration form that can be picked up at the Municipal Building. More than 100 residents braved the cold and rainy temperatures Sunday evening and came together to celebrate the holiday season. Starting the celebrations off was a Menorah lighting for the second night of Hanukkah at the Municipal Building, followed by latkes at the Lake Hopatcong Community Jewish Center. Later in the evening, residents filled Borough Hall and listened to Christmas carols by the Byram Bay Christian Church and Joe Tree before the tree was lit. Families warmed up with hot chocolate as Santa arrived on a Hopatcong Fire Department truck where he handed out candy to the children.

Event Saturday at St. Jude's will collect presents and Toys 'R' Us gift cards for Hopatcong kids in need.
The Hopatcong community will once again come together for the annual Christmas for the Kids event that will benefit borough families in need during the holidays. The ninth annual event, which will be held at St. Jude's Church from 6 to 11 p.m., will provide entertainment from local musicians and comedians, and also serve snacks, soda and beer. The event is adults only and is asking for either an unwrapped gift or a Toys R Us gift card at a $25 suggested price for admission. All gifts will go to Hopatcong kids in need. 19-year-old charged with disorderly conduct for Mount Olive incident, police said.
A Hopatcong man was arrested last week in connection to a Mount Olive commercial burglary that occured over the summer, police said. Harry Stickle, 19, was charged with disorderly conduct for his involvement in a burglary at the Oakwood Village Shop on July 10, according to a report released by Cpl. Eric Anthony. Stickle is accused of being involved in the incident that occurred at about 3:10 a.m., when police say an individual broke into the front door and attempted to break into the business located in the Oakwood Village Apartment Complex, according to the report. Stickle was charged and released on his own recognizance pending a court appearance, the report said.

For months the building across the street from Borough Hall in the heart of Hopatcong stood vacant after several restaurants shut down the past few years. But now a Hopatcong family is looking to add some excitement to that 30 Hopatchung Road spot, after bringing a new type of restaurant to town. Uncle Sam's Bagel Café, which features a variety of homemade American food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, had its grand opening on Sunday.
