18 of 20 largest sewage spills in the northeast were reported in New Jersey and New York.
New Jersey saw approximately 5.1 billion gallons of untreated or partially treated sewage flow into waterways in the weeks and months following Superstorm Sandy, according to new data released by Climate Central. In total, the eight states hardest-hit by the storm had 11 billion gallons flow into canals, rivers and bays. "To put that in perspective, 11 billion gallons is equal to New York’s Central Park stacked 41 feet high with sewage, or more than 50 times the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The vast majority of that sewage flowed into the waters of New York City and northern New Jersey in the days and weeks during and after the storm," the Climate Central report said. Data included in the report was compiled from state agencies and …

Township files FEMA paperwork by May 1 deadline.
The township would like to plan a special one-time only spring pick-up of brush and yard debris to allow residents to clear their yards of debris left by Hurricane Sandy. The hang-ups, discussed at the last Township Council meeting, are being able to get a reimbursement application filed with the Federal Emergency Management Agency by the last eligible day, and whether the Lake Mohawk Country Club, a private neighborhood with its own bylaws and rules, should be included in the townwide effort. If the project was approved, FEMA would reimburse Sparta for 75 percent of the cost. Township Manager David Troust said other Sussex County towns are planning such cleanups. If Sparta was to schedule one, he said, homeowners would be able to get rid …

Council has been seeking meeting with cable provider since Hurricane Sandy.
The Sparta Township Council has not been able to secure a firm meeting date from representatives of Service Electric Cable Television Inc. to discuss a 10-day outage that occurred during Hurricane Sandy. Since last fall the township has been trying to meet with cable officials to discuss the service outage and a possible refund for Sparta residents. Following the damaging storm, Sparta residents appeared several times at council meetings to complain about the cable company. On Tuesday, resident Rich Sullivan asked about the issue, saying it seemed to have dropped off the council’s agenda. Councilman Jerry Murphy has said previously that the contract calls for periodic meetings about service. “This is why we wanted a two-year contract,” he…

Judge delays ruling on shutting down online presence until April 22.
A website being used to garner donations for Hurricane Sandy relief may continue to be in operation until April 22, despite its owners being sued for fraud, according to a report on nj.com. Judge Robert Contillo was expected to rule this week the website be shut down, but extended the hearing for nearly two more weeks. The operators of the website are John Sandberg and Christina Terraccino, both of Sparta. The Attorney General has accused the pair of soliciting more than $600,000 in donations after the storm devastated New Jersey in the fall of 2012, allegedly filtering $13,000 into their personal bank accounts and dispersing less than 1-percent of the funds to actual storm victims. The website, for now, is able to be updated but can no …

Hayley Vicedomini takes part in network's ‘Spring Fix’ as part of her Alternative Break program at Montclair State.
A college student spending spring break at the shore isn’t that that out of the ordinary. But Hopatcong native Hayley Vicedomini spent her time off from Montclair State University at the Shore participating in the MTV alternative spring break program where she worked to rebuild a home devastated by Hurricane Sandy. And her efforts were recorded for reality show television. “We were rebuilding this elderly couple's home in Lavallette, NJ,” Vicedomini said. “They have the bay in their backyard and the ocean is on the other side of the street. The house got flooded up to the ceiling.” MTV , the United Way and mtvU, the network’s 24-hour college channel, recorded their efforts as part of their “Spring Fix,” program to air later this year. …

A meeting will be held with company executives Friday at their Morristown headquarters.
With the hope of getting answers about JCP&L's poor response in the restoration of power for customers in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, Bridgewater resident Neha Pallod Limaye has scheduled a meeting with officials at the company's Morristown headquarters. The meeting will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to noon for anyone interested in speaking to JCP&L officials about their response, or lack thereof, following the hurricane, and their plans for change in the future. Limaye initially started a petition to get JCP&L out of Bridgewater about a week after the hurricane, and also created a Facebook group to bring together people from across the state who were disappointed by the performance of the power company following Superstorm Sandy. The …

Spokesperson says online company will assist authorities however possible.
Donors who gave money to an allegedly phony Hurricane Sandy relief fund may get their money back from PayPal, according to nj.com. PayPal spokesperson Bergen Kay said the online money transfer system would cooperate with law enforcement if criminal charges are filed and assist with refunds dependent on court outcomes, the report said. The state filed suit last week against John Sandberg and Christina Terracino, of Sparta, after an investigation revealed the duo set up the Hurricane Sandy Relief Foundation without charity status. The suit claimed Sandberg and Terracino solicited $631,000 in donations through the fund, with less than 1-percent being given to victims of the devastating 2012 natural disaster. Of the funds donated, the pair is …

Residents told cable company would not offer credits for lack of service.
The Township Council supported a resolution at their last meeting seeking credits from Service Electric Cable Television for the days that the service was off-line during Hurricane Sandy. Electric power and cable was out for up to two weeks in some parts of Sparta during the Oct. 22 to 29 storm. The local resolution is modeled on one passed by Andover, demanding the company credit residents for 10 days of service not provided during the storm. Resident Richard Sullivan said he called Service Electric, which is based in Pennsylvania, and was told the company was not offering any credit for service lost during the storm. He said another cable provider which serves another municipality where he has a second home offered to credit him on the …

State says $631K in donations garnered, less than 1 percent went to Hurricane Sandy victims.
The state has filed suit against a Sparta pair who allegedly created a Hurricane Sandy relief fund without properly registering it as a charity, and “unlawfully misled the public,” Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said. The suit claims John Sandberg and Christina Terraccino diverted public donated funds designed for Hurricane Sandy relief into their own personal accounts, misleading donors with false claims about the ways donations would be used, falsely claiming that donations are tax-deductible, and otherwise deceiving the public in violation of New Jersey’s charity registration and consumer protection laws. As of January, the Hurricane Sandy Relief Foundation, created by the duo, raised more than $631,000 in monetary donations from at …

Pub dwellers can raise a pint and raise money for superstorm Sandy victims with the debut of FU Sandy draft. The hybrid white ale (the FU stands for Forever Unloved, of course) is a special brew created by New Jersey's own Flying Fish Brewing Co. All proceeds are dedicated to Sandy-related charities, and Flying Fish hopes to raise at least $50,000 from beer and merchandise sales. Flying Fish founder Gene Muller said the brewery "knew immediately that we wanted to do something to help" after Sandy struck, the Huffington Post reports. "Every single aspect of this beer, from the man-hours spent brewing it to the hops used to season it to the kegs that will contain it, has been donated so every cent brought in goes to superstorm Sandy victims…
