Swimmers Leap in Lake for Good Cause
Lake Hopatcong Elks' Leap in the Lake raises funds for kids' needs.
When Rick Gathen first suggested a Leap in the Lake as a fundraiser for the Lake Hopatcong Elks, people told him it was crazy and it wouldn’t work. “That’s when I knew I had to do it,” he said. The third annual Leap in the Lake happened on Saturday. Gathen said he anticipated that this year’s leap would far exceed the proceeds from last year’s. The event, which raises funds for special needs in the 11 towns the Elks Club 782 serves, started with 37 participants in its first year. “Last year we tripled what we had the first year, and this year it looks like we’ll have about 200 people leaping, and about 400 people here,” he said. “And I couldn’t be more delighted.
