Two firefighters rescue woman after she drove into Lake Hopatcong.
NORTH JERSEY -- The woman who drove her car into a lake Thursday night may not have survived if it wasn't for the two rescuers' quick response and her stroke of luck that night. The two Hopatcong firefighters who saved the woman—whose identity police have not released—said she's "lucky" to be alive after being trapped in her car in the freezing cold Lake Hopatcong for at least 15 minutes after hitting a guard rail. When the two rescuers, Billy Long and Robert Tallaksen, first arrived to the scene on Hopatcong Street they saw the car on its side in the water, unsure of the woman's condition. "At first, I thought it was a good possibility that she wouldn't be alive because more than three quarters of her car was submerged," Tallaksen said. …

'Postcard History' series compilation, by Bonnie-Lynn Nadzeika, released by Arcadia Publishing on Oct. 15.
A picture is worth a thousand words. Or, for Lake Hopatcong resident Bonnie-Lynn Nadzeika, between about $1 to $20. That is what Nadzeika, a former Morris County Historical Society director, said she has paid for the bulk of her collection of postcards showing scenes from Morristown through the years. As part of Arcadia Publishing's "Postcard History Series," those and others have been compiled to create "Morristown," released Oct. 15. Like its more widely-recognized "Images of America" series, Arcadia's "Postcard History" series provides a snapshot serving of towns across the country, but through the lens of postcards. Compiling the hundreds of postcards across 126 pages of "Morristown" was an inviting task for the self-professed history …

Termination notice submitted Wednesday, but chairman says operations will continue.
Although the Lake Hopatcong Commission has been denied funds by the state, chairman of the commission and Jefferson Mayor Russell Felter said he still sees the commission operating. At Wednesday night's meeting in Mount Arlington, Felter said the commission submitted a termination notice to commission administrator Donna Macalle-Holly that is effective on Dec. 21. He said, however, that because it's a state commission, the termination won't cease operations, and instead would terminate the employees. "We're not quite sure where we're going to go, but we're going to have to do some volunteer things," he said. "We're really just trying to feel our way through the process here." Felter said there are still more responsibilities, including …

Lake needs money after funding bill stalled by senate.
When it comes to how to fund work on Lake Hopatcong now that Bill S495 is being held up by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, many ideas are being floated around. However, the one that seems to be the least popular is user fees. The lake stands to lose about $150,000 if the bill is not passed, which Gov. Chris Christie has promised to veto unless a tax cut is instituted. While the money has to be made up somewhere, most agree that user fees are not the anwer. “We’ve discussed user fees before, and they won’t fly,” Lake Hopatcong Commission chairman Russ Felter said. “People see them like another tax, and they don’t want to pay any more taxes.” “You can call them anything you want, but user fees are a tax,” Ray Fernandez, owner…

LHC says it needs passage of Bill S 495.
If the state government does not pass Bill S 495 that would provide $150,000 to maintain Lake Hopatcong, the Lake Hopatcong Commission would be “out of money by the end of the year,” according to its chairman Russell Felter. Senator Anthony Bucco said he held the bill in the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee on Monday. “The problem is that I felt that the Democrats were going to kill the bill. So rather than have it voted down, I held it, because if it got voted down I would have to start all over again with a new bill,” Bucco said. “This is strictly a political move by the Democrats,” he continued. “They are annoyed at the governor because he told them he wouldn’t pass any spending bills unless they passed his tax cut legislation…

Amount had already been cut from $400,000 to $150,000.
Bill S 495, which would provide $150,000 in funding for Lake Hopatcong, was not moved out of the Senate Budget and Appropriations committee on Monday, according to an article on PolitickerNJ. The article said state Democrats held the bill because they understood that Gov. Chris Christie would veto any spending bill that came across his desk that unless there was a proposal to cut spending. “The Governor was very unambiguous,” Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-37) said to PolitickerNJ. “He didn’t leave any opening here.” The bill, which originally appropriated $400,000 for lake maintenance, was amended to $150,000 during the committee’s meeting, but still couldn’t make it out of committee. Lake Hopatcong resident and advocate Tim Clancy, was also …

What is wrong with this picture? We all know that if this was any one of us our names and details of the accident would have been published in an instant for everyone else to read about. Who is this person and what makes them so special?? They are apparently very well connected to keep their name out of the press, which tells us that either they are a public figure or they know someone who is …   more ›
