Politicians have to make tough—perhaps expensive—decisions and need to start taking action.
It’s been three weeks since Superstorm Sandy blew through New Jersey, and past time to begin figuring out how to minimize losses the next time. Some solutions involve building; some, doing the opposite. Just as the attacks of Sept. 11 brought talk of rebuilding, there have been vows to restore the shore back to Oct. 28, 2012, as if nothing had happened. That would be a huge and costly mistake. It is not politically correct to say that at least some of what was destroyed should not be rebuilt. But it’s the truth. Barrier islands are aptly named. They are supposed to serve as barriers for the shoreline. When a major storm like Sandy or Irene hits, they will take the brunt of it and provide some measure of protection for the mainland. They …

After JCP&L's outage map reported less than 1,000 Hopatcong customers were in the dark late Friday night, that number fluctuated throughout the day Saturday. A daily update from the utility company sent to the media Saturday afternoon included a photo of crews working in Hopatcong. However, outages in the borough rose to nearly 3,000 at one point, according to JCP&L's outage map. The outages dipped to 1,197 at about 9:30 p.m., according to the JCP&L map. Power outages that have significantly plagued Hopatcong since Tropical Storm Sandy more than a week ago were significantly reduced Friday. Only 13 percent of borough JCP&L customers remained without power Friday night at about 9 p.m., according to the utility company's outage map that indicated 866 were still in the dark. That number dropped from nearly 2,500 Friday at noon. Hopatcong Mayor Silvia Petillo issued a statement Friday afternoon, saying borough officials have been working to get more answers for residents. "Yesterday and today we saw an increase in activity and power restoration in the borough," she said. "However, we realize that this is little comfort for those who remain without power. For the past 11 days, we have heard, …

An increase in manpower will help JCP&L restore most New Jersey outages by Saturday evening, according to a statement released Friday afternoon. An additional 1,200 line workers joined the nearly 7,000 workers already on the ground in New Jersey on Friday. After winter storm Athena caused JCP&L's power outage numbers to increase by more than 100,000 from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning, both the company and Gov. Chris Christie have said Sunday should bring the state's residents relief. JCP&L reported Friday at noon that 163,309 of its nearly 1.1 million customers were without power. However, that number dropped to 110,468 by Friday night at 10 p.m. Municipalities in Patch's coverage area in Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Passaic and …

There will be no Halloween on Monday, but on the bright side, nearly 2,000 Hopatcong homes will no longer be in the dark by Sunday night, Mayor Sylvia Petillo was told by JCP&L. According to Petillo, 1,900 borough JCP&L customers will have power restored on Sunday and 300 more expected on Monday. About 72 percent of Hopatcong remained without power Sunday afternoon with 4,694 outages as of about 2 p.m. Due to the unsafe road conditions, trick-or-treating has been cancelled in Hopatcong. The high school shelter remains open and pets are welcome. Petillo said if residents don't have their own crates, the high school can provide them with one. Ice is available at Fire House No. 3 across the street from Dunkin' Donuts.
