What Should Go Here? Open Lakeside Location

What should replace Curves, which, after a 10-year run, closed on Tuesday?

It was a difficult day for dozens of people and most especially owner Amy Drake when Curves closed in Hopatcong on Tuesday. After a 10-year run, the gym was forced to shut its doors due to a declining enrollment and rising costs. Soon the 52 Lakeside Blvd. location will host a new business. What should it be? There's already a florist and a photography studio in the small strip mall. What would work best at the location? Tell us in the comments.

Struble Gardens a 'Dream of Ours,' Owners Say

After years of landscaping, brothers hope adding a garden center to their business will help establish them in Hopatcong.

Lester Struble didn't hesitate to answer as his younger brother, Michael, sat nodding to his left. "I would say this has been a dream of ours," he said. "It's nice to see it come to fruition." Struble Gardens opened on Lakeside Boulevard a little over a week ago—just in time for the spring and summer booms. And as it prepares for its grand opening May 5-6, it has an eye toward the future, the older brother said. "We want to be here for a long time," Lester Struble said. The Struble brothers, who grew up in West Milford, each studied horticulture at Delaware Valley College in Pennsylvania before opening up a landscaping business, based out of Ledgewood, in 1998. Lester Struble said the pair specializes in high-end residential landscaping, …

Curves to Close After Almost a Decade

Owner cites declining membership, says 'I'll just miss the people.'

Elinor Peter had just fallen. But she couldn't wait to tell Amy Drake the good news. Peter, of Hopatcong, had battled osteoporosis, a degenerative bone disease, for about a decade. So she had to let Drake, the owner of Curves, know what didn't happen. "I dislocated my finger," Peter said. "But I was just so happy that I was able to not have a [broken bone]." Soon, however, Peter will have to treat her disease elsewhere. Drake said she will close Curves in early May—a month short of her 10-year anniversary—citing a declining membership and rising costs. Drake said it was one of the toughest decisions she's ever made. "But I've lost members and we just didn't have new members coming into the place," she said. "It's been a financial thing. …

It’s amazing that curves charge so much for providing so little. Like no showers, no classes and no personal training services. I am a personal trainer in Northern VA and Georgetown Washington DC area. http://myur.com This area’s economy is very strong. Many Curves went out of business and closed their door not because they charge so much. The went out of business cause they don't provide a great…   more ›

What Should Go Here, Hopatcong?

Location once hosted a florist. Now what should bloom here?

In 2010, Get Potted owner Patricia Webster moved her florist business from the edge of the Hopatcong-Roxbury boarder to a smaller location just down the road. At the time, Webster said of the move: "The rent and the space is actually better for us. As nice and quaint as the old house was, going up and down the stairs was difficult. People couldn't go upstairs. They didn't want to. They didn't know. It was too hot. So we're hoping that this location is going to be a little more conducive to all of our customers." The two-story building has sat vacant since. What do you think should go here? What would stick around? What would most benefit the borough and, more importantly, you. Tell us in the comments.

Readers' Choice: Best Chinese Food

Who's got the best take-out in Hopatcong? You tell us.

For years, one Chinese take-out spot had a stranglehold over the market in Hopatcong. After all, it was the only one in the borough. Then another moved in, and it was on. The question became, Where can I get the better grub? The veteran Lucky House or the upstart Happy Wok? And while both coexisted, with each seemingly serving its portion of Hopatcong, the query remains. So, we want to hear from you: Who's better? Voting in the poll below is open until 9 a.m. Friday. The winner will be selected on a point system based on poll votes and directory ratings. If there is a tie, a winner will be determined by the amount of positive comments posted on this article and positive reviews received on its directory listing. For full contest rules, …

Borough salon wins Hopatcong Patch's Readers' Choice contest.

Where's the best place to get your child's hair cut in Hopatcong? Patch readers have spoken, and they say it's Scissor Styx. The River Styx Road salon was chosen No. 1 among three of the borough's options during voting, which spanned from 5 a.m. Monday to 9 a.m. Friday. Owner Kathy Benemerito said she was "honored" to win the contest. "Thank you to everyone who voted for us," she said, "and has been to our business over the years. I'm very lucky to have such wonderful employees that have helped us become what we are." Don't forget to weigh in on Hopatcong Patch's next Readers' Choice poll, which will start 5 a.m. next Monday.

St. Patrick's Day: Where to Get Green Beer in Hopatcong

Corned beef. Potatoes. Oh, and of course ...

Most holidays have their hallmarks. Easter? Chocolate. Christmas? Egg nog. National Ice Cream Day? Uhh ... The same is true for St. Patrick's Day. In fact, it's got several, from corned beef to cabbage to potatoes and, of course, green beer. With all that in mind, Hopatcong Patch asked borough St. Patty's Day hot spots what they're doing for the occasion. Here's what they said. By the way, you can get green beer at each of these places. Castaways Tavern Why Go: Doug the Soundman will play from 6 to 10 p.m., followed by The Wrecks until close. But that's not all. There will be drink specials and a free corned beef and Irish soda bread buffet starting at 6 p.m. Don't forget about the full Irish menu that will be available until 5 p.m. Cover…

What Should Go Here? Open Spot Near Modick

The Hopatcong business location has seen two businesses close since November 2010.

In January, Thyme Out! closed indefinitely. Now a "for sale" sign hangs on the railing outside its door. At the time, two of Tyme Out!'s four owners said the restaurant was closing for "business reasons." It was a vauge, yet somewhat familiar explanation. Parkside Coffee & Grill, which operated the location for about a decade, shut down due to similar reasons in November 2010. But what do you think would save the location? What would fit best at the place near Modick Park? Another restaurant? A convenience store? A small retail shop? Share your thoughts in the comments. Click here to see what Patch readers believed should take over at the emtpy Feuerstein's Tavern and here for what should go at the empty Tidal Wave.

Lakeside Grill Pays Fine, Gets Entertainment License

Borough business works out deal with construction official.

Lakeside Restaurant Bar & Grill paid the fine it owed Hopatcong after violating a borough construction law, according to a document Patch obtained via the Open Public Records Act, and was recently granted an entertainment license. Lakeside Grill owed the borough $22,000 for a violation stemming from the removal of an interior wall without notifying construction officials in January 2011. But owners worked out an agreement with Construction Official Bill O'Connor soon after, paying a $1,000 penalty, according to the document. The business also was given an entertainment license, which will extend through June. Its previous entertainment license was revoked in June 2010 due to the outstanding fine. The business was initially fined $500 and …

Different Valentine's Day Paths for Hopatcong Florists

Patricia Webster and Samantha Prestifilippo can't wait for the holiday. But for slightly different reasons.

Patricia Webster has high hopes for Valentine's Day. So does Samantha Prestifilippo. Hers, however, are a little different. Both are Hopatcong florists. But Webster, owner of Get Potted, wishes for a busier Valentine's Day than last year while Prestifillippo, owner of Presto Personal Gardens, Flowers and Gifts, won't mind if things slow down a bit, as long as some Hopatcong High School seniors raise enough money to eventually have a blast. Webster said Get Potted didn't quite see the returns it desired on Valentine's Day in 2011 due to a sluggish economy and the holiday falling on a Monday, which, she said, gave many couples reason to celebrate during the weekend prior. But with Valentine's Day on a Tuesday this year, Webster said Get …
