Teaneck man ordered held on $500,000 bail after Sparta burglary.
Two alleged members of a Bergen County burglary crew that authorities have said is an offshoot of the notorious "James Bond Gang" pleaded not guilty in Sussex County this week. Leevan Lawrence, 31, of Englewood, Courry Rice, 30, of Hackensack, entered their pleas before Newtown Superior Court Judge N. Peter Conforti, according to the New Jersey Herald. Sparta police arrested both men in February alongside 32-year-old Jerry Montgomery, of Teaneck. The trio faces third-degree theft, third-degree conspiracy to commit burglary and theft, fourth-degree criminal mischief and third-degree burglary charges. Sparta police arrested a 21-year-old Lake Hopatcong man Wednesday after an officer allegedly witnessed him roll marijuana into a cigar. Officer Craig J. Grauerholz was in a police car stopped next to a silver Honda Civic at the Sparta Junction at 3:18 p.m. Wednesday, March 20 waiting to turn right onto Rt. 15 when he witnessed the passenger roll marijuana into a cigar, according to John P. Beebe of the Sparta Police Department. Police stopped the car and asked the passenger about the cigar. The man denied any knowledge of the cigar or possession of any illegal substance, Beebe said. Township's newest elevations come with history of law enforcement pedigree.
On Tuesday, the Sparta Township touted its police department. Three officers were promoted and a fourth was celebrated on his retirement from the force. Promoted were Lt. Neil J. Spidaletto, Sgt. Joseph H. Pensado and Sgt. Terrence J. Mulligan. Detective Sgt. John Schanstra was honored upon his retirement after 20 years with the Sparta department. “This is a very proud day for the Sparta Police Department,” said Chief Ernest I. Reigstad. He said Schanstra was “a great officer and will be greatly missed. We are also promoting three outstanding officers, which is an indication of the future of the department. Bags bearing stamps that read 'Dirty Money,' 'Hurricane Sandy,' and 'American Express,' were found bundled in bricks in duo's trunk.
A total of 196 bags of heroin were seized by Sparta police Sunday morning from a duo stopped driving on Route 15 South. The bags were stamped with names such as "Sky High," "Dirty Money," "American Express," "Hurricane Sandy," and with a thumbs up symbol and were found in bricks, bundles and deks, according to police. Twenty-one-year-old Jeremy Kondak, of Port Jervis, NY, was charged with possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, unlawful possession of a syringe and issued a summons for speeding. Hamburg woman suffered head trauma, crawled out from smashed vehicle after being struck from behind on Route 94 South.
A pregnant woman was seriously injured Saturday afternoon after Sparta police said her vehicle was struck on Route 94 South. The driver of the car police said struck her SUV faces reckless driving charges as the 26-year-old Hamburg woman, who is five months pregnant, was transported to the hospital. After being struck from behind while driving south along on the highway just north of the Homestead Restaurant, the SUV driven by Caitlin A. Kearny, was pushed into a utility pole, which snapped in half, and then into a stone retaining wall at a nearby residence. A trio of Sussex County men were charged with heroin possession after Sparta police said they found 19 bags of the drug in their car, along with open bottles of alcohol, on Jan. 12. Michael Scalici, 24, of Hamburg, the driver of the car, was charged with possession of heroin, possesion of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle and issued several motor vehicle summonses. Fire official said fire appears to be accidental.
A shed fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon appears to be accidental and non-suspicious, Sparta Police said. Sparta police Sgt. John-Paul Beebe said the fire was at a Sagamore Trail residence and officials arrived just before noon. The small garden shed caught fire on its own without any damage to other parts of the property or house, Beebe said. Beebe said the homeowner called about the fire, but no injuries were reported. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames right away, he said.

Woman who crashed car in Sparta Thursday charged with possession of marijuana.
The woman who crashed her car on Route 94 Thursday after police believed she fell asleep at the wheel was served with drug charges Friday as Sparta police continue their investigation of the crash. Renae K. Cianci, 24, of Highland Lakes, was charged with possession of 50 grams or less of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, including two small plastic bags and a broken, multi-colored ceramic smoking pipe. According to Sparta Police Sgt. 24-year-old Highland Lakes woman airlifted to the hospital, truck driver avoided head-on collision.
A 24-year-old woman appears to have fallen asleep at the wheel when her car crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a tractor trailer on Route 94 Thursday afternoon, Sparta Police said. Renae K. Cianci, of Highland Lakes, was extricated with the Jaws of Life and airlifted to Morristown Medical Center with multiple fractures to her legs and pelvis, Sgt. John-Paul Beebe said. Cianci's condition was not immediately known Thursday night at about 7 p.m., Beebe said. According to Beebe, drug paraphernalia was found in Cianci's 2004 Nissan Sentra, which was destroyed in the crash. A Sparta teenager had to be restrained by police when he was arrested for DWI after crashing his car into his neighbor's lawn Friday, according to Police Sgt. John-Paul Beebe. Joseph A. Ayrey, 19, was charged with underage DWI, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting arrest and issued several motor vehicle summonses. According to Beebe, police received a call at about 12:30 a.m. of a vehicle that was stuck on the front yard outside a Castlewood Trail residence.
