A superstorm Sandy relief organization run by a Sparta couple has collected nearly $1 million in donations despite not being registered as a charity, the Asbury Park Press reports. The Hurricane Sandy Relief Foundation, operated by John Sandberg and Christina Terraccino of Sparta, also uses the name of a charity legally registered by first lady Mary Pat Christie to solicit funds and is not a tax-exempt organization, although it claims to be, the paper reports. Sandberg and Terraccino defended the relief foundation, acknowledging that while there may have been missteps in the creation of the organization, neither had any ill intent. Sparta store plans to relocate to 10,000-square-foot location formerly occupied by lumber site.
The Liquor Factory plans to open its new 10,000-square-foot showroom in Sparta by summer, following the purchase of the former Stroeber’s Lumber site on Woodport Road, just down the road from its present location. Liquor Factory spokesman Bill Tobin said the company will be able to expand beyond its current 2,500-square-foot store and offer a wider variety of wines, liquors and beers. The vacant space will be renovated to revel wider aisles and 27, 30-door coolers for product display. There will also be additional parking, he said. “We will add a growler station and customers will be able to use shopping carts, which they have been requesting,” Tobin said. The New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime Report showed Sparta's overall crime rate to decrease between 2010 and 2011. The report, released last week, stated that reported larceny incidents from 116 incidents in 2010 to 93 in 2011 and there was one less aggrevated assault incident (2 to 1) in 2010. Violent crime cases, however, slightly increased with three incidents in 2011 from one in 2010, while non-violent crimes saw a decrease from 132 incidents in 2010 to 111 in 2011. In 2010, there were was one motor vehicle theft in the township and none reported in 2011. Sparta's Crime Index Total saw a big decline in 2011 from 133 to 114. Spartans return to championship game for the first time in seven years.
The Spartans are looking to take home their first state finals football win in nine years at Kean University on Saturday. Sparta, seeded No. 5, will compete against second-seeded Ramapo High School in the North 1 Group 3 state final. The Sparta High School football team is going into the game, which will begin at 4 p.m., after a strong season with a record of 9-1. Sparta defeated River Dell High School on Friday in semifinals, and won against Mahwah High School in quarterfinals on Nov. 16. Head Coach Frank Marchiano said this year's record is a testament to all of the team efforts since the summer. The Sparta High School varsity football team is headed to the state final championships on Saturday to face the No. 2-seeded Ramapo team. The game will kick off at Kean University at 4 p.m. as the Spartans, ranked No. 5, compete against Ramapo High School, ranked No. 2, in the North 1 Group 3 State Finals. The Spartans, now 9-1, defeated River Dell High School Friday in semifinals. Council plans to add committee to redesign township's construction application.
The Sparta Township Council said Tuesday night they're looking to add a committee to work on making the construction application process easier for residents. Township Councilman Gil Gibbs suggested redesigning the application into a one page form that residents can access online. "Other towns already do this," he said. "I would like to set up a committee to look at doing this and possibly review the entire construction process." He said he has already discussed the concept with a couple of people who are willing to join the committee. The volunteers so far are former council members Jim Henderson and Mike Devine, and former town manager Bill Curcio.
