A Wharton man drove drunk and wasn't even old enough to drink, police said. Officer David Kraus stopped a car for the driver's failure to keep right on Lakeside Boulevard at 3:27 a.m. Saturday, police said. Kraus could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage on the breath of Mathew Weissman, 20, police said. Wiessman, who failed field sobriety tests, was arrested and taken to the Hopatcong police department, where he was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated while underage, reckless driving, failure to keep right and failure to notify the state Department of Motor Vehicles of a change of address, police said. Four Hopatcong teens were drinking alcohol in the area known as Devil's Footprint, police said. Officer William Sutphen saw the juveniles walking on Brooklyn Mountain Road at 10:49 p.m. Friday, police said. When Stuphen stopped the junveniles—two 16-year-olds, a 15-year-old and a 14-year-old—he could smell alcoholic beverages on their breaths, police said. He learned they were drinking in the woods at the end of the road in a section known colloquially as Devil's Footprint, police said. The juveniles were arrested and taken to the Hopatcong police department, police said. A Hopatcong man threw a bag of pot on the ground while trying to elude an officer April 20—the unofficial pot-smokers' holiday—police said. Officer James Bianculli was checking borough parks while on patrol when he saw three people in Squire Field around 11:30 p.m. Friday, police said. After he saw 22-year-old Jason Olavarria throw something, the three began jogging away, police said. When Bianculli finally stopped them, he discovered what Olavarria discarded—a bag of marijuana, police said. Manuel Figeroa, 18, was carrying a 24-ounce can of Keystone Ice beer, police said. Nine juveniles were drinking alcohol in the woods off Mildred Avenue, police said. Officer Paul Barta saw a young male walking out of the woods at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, police said. While questioning the juvenile, the officer learned that other juveniles were drinking in the woods, police said. With the help of officers Anthony Cirri, Richard Sadowski and Kurt Eller of the Stanhope police department, the other juveniles were located, police said. The juveniles—four 15-year-olds, two 16-year-olds and three 17-year-olds—were taken to headquarters, where their parents were notified, police said. A Hopatcong woman provided alcohol to underage friends, police said. An officer pulled over Kristen Castoro, 20, of Hopatcong, for speeding on River Styx Road around 11 p.m. Dec. 31, police said. She admitted to having a glass of wine before entering the vehicle, but didn't have the odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath, police said. Castoro admitted to having bottles of alcohol, including an open 12-pack of beer, in her car, police said. Each of Castoro's four passengers, who were under the legal drinking age, admitted to consuming alcohol at a private residence earlier in the night, police said. A Hopatcong man was caught drinking underage and then, hours later, arguing with a woman in the police department parking lot and cursing at a police officer, police said. Officers responded to a report of a small fire and a car parked in the woods at the end of Brooklyn Mountain—known as "Devils Footprint"—on Nov. 30. Four people walked toward the officer passing around a clear bottle, police said. An officer found the bottle, filled with rum, in Steven Johnson's back pocket, police said. Johnson was charged with providing alcohol to minors. Harry Stickle and Kathleen Rattay each were charged with possession of alcohol underage.
