It’s a sad testimony to the times we live in when a tracking dog is replaced with a one function drug detecting dog. Not going to be the same loved by everyone K9 Officer but I agree a much needed one. Lots of luck to Officer Snyder and Eli.

Congratulations Officer Sutphen on a job well done. Could have made the front page in a way that no one wants but your judgment and quick action averted a major incident and, boy, would the anti-cop people be all over this one. From the story it sounds like this guy is one we could do without in our town. Let’s see how long it takes the courts to set him back on the streets of Hopatcong. We can be proud of our cops and confident in their abilities.

I thought that there is already a path around that park. It goes down from the picnic area to that little bridge and then runs up next to Hopatchung Rd. to Nariticong and across with links to the gazebo?? Oh wait, that’s not Modick, that the Maxim Glenns Park. Ok, so Modick has a path running through the middle and down to Maxim Glenn where one can cross a not very busy street and get on the path mentioned above.. Either way, is it needed?? Why do those two parks, so close together, have different names anyhow? It's really one park, isn't it?

  • On the article Tell Us: How Will the Pope's Resignation Affect the Church?

    Rich Smith

    8:13 am on Tuesday, February 12, 2013

The Church will, of course, go on as it has and a new Pope will be elected so the affect on me, a run of the mill Catholic, will be minimal although, I must say that this is a historically significant event as he is the first Pope to leave the job under his own power in 600 years. His reasons are his own and, I’m sure he has the Church in mind. However: the timing of his resignation does confuse and concern me: Right in the middle of Lent seems to be an inopportune time for the Pope to leave. My concern is that his medical condition is more critical than we are advised. It is as though the rigors of the Papal Office during this time are way too much. Even with the support that he would surely have. He and his replacement are in my prayers.

At best, our insurance rates go up because of people like this and at worse, innocent people get killed. If he is stupid enough to take all those pills on top of marijuana that’s fine but others should not be taking the chance of a collision with him. Take away his license. If he drives again, lock him up. But, of course, he’ll get a slap on the wrist and maybe an offer to go straight. Yea, right.

  • On the article 11 Bullying Incidents Reported in Schools

The severity of the incident and how it was addressed by school staff and parents is more important that the numbers. I am not familiar with the procedures in place but any incident should be reported to the offending student’s home and the parents along with school staff should act accordingly. The bullying that is not reported can be the most harmful as it can continue to cause harm to the victim(s). Vigilance is the only defense on this count and I hope our school staff is on constant watch.

Leap in the Lake is a great idea and, like their annual picnic in Wanaque, a good way to raises some funds for the kids that the Elks care so much for. Go get um Elks!!! Lots of fun for the spectators as well as the “leapers”. This is real great Hopatcong stuff. Best wishes to all who take part in the event.

The placement of jughandles should be more selective but not completely band. They take up some time but they do contribute to safety.

  • On the article Additional Credit Card Fee Begins in New Jersey

    Rich Smith

Retailers will lose out in the long run because people paying with cash will plan more accurately before shopping and will, by virtue of the cash on hand, eliminate much of the last minute spontaneous purchases. Banks are in bad shape and this will cause pain in that industry too. Many gas stations are set up for two levels of payment already and I often wonder how many “fill ups” are changed to ten dollars when people see the cash/credit sign. It took years for payment by card to become common place. The system has been set up for card purchases by plan and this will hit business negatively in the long run. As many have said; on line buying will really take over the retail world. Local merchants and big retainers better watch their step on this one. They have much to lose.

Sounds like a dangerous loose cannon. Joe’s, keep your eyes open and phone handy. Wish the cops could have done more than let him go. Too many nuts like this running around.
